Here's to you Metric!!

Lookee what I found in my local grocer's refrigerated cabinet! Beer from New Zealand!! Made by Hobbits for Hobbits!!! The best lager in the shire!!! Kind of like a grown up version of the Keebler elves!! Instead of a bunch of cookies we get Man Water!!!

Actually, it's very good. It reminds me most of Heineken, at least the nose, and a kind of malty sweetness in the finish. All in all, a fine effort from our brethren down under. Of course, now I'll have some comment where I'm drinking the crappiest beer in New Zealand. "You can't be serious!" Like how we'll drink Newcastle brown ale here in the states and say things like "this is good!!" when at home its like drinking malt liquor: it does the trick, but it's revered more for its alcohol content than it's other qualities . . .

I realize now that I think that unless there's some beer in the lesser Englishy places, like Hong Kong, or India, I have finally completed my brewed grain, malt, and hops tour of the Anglosphere!! Hooray for Beer!!! And I admit that the great shame of our Nation is that that while we share our language, and our civic culture with England, our Mum, about all of our beer is named for Germans. How's that for payback? It's like dating someone mom disapproves of . . .

No, you're good.
Beer drinkers are as partisan here as they seem to be everywhere. I imagine there are bushmen in the kahilari arguing that their fermented maize is better than the next village's fermented maize, which everyone knows tastes like canine urine.
Steinlager is very popular here, but my overall impression is that it's regarded as slightly commercialised. Goodness knows why, we have about 3 major breweries here that make 70% of all the beer, so whoever makes steinlager has a little less than a 33% chance of having made whatever the person drunkenkly expounding the virtues of their favourite brew is consuming. We do have a growing number of micro breweries here and they're doing some interesting stuff.
I'm afraid I'm a light beer drinker most of the time, simply because my tolerance for alcohol is very low. I didn't go to university, so missed that early training. I prefer "Light Ice", made by Lion breweries as I recall, review here, http://www.realbeer.co.nz/alefiles/beer_writers/geoff_griggs/article_2003_11_20_3138.php, but I can cope with most light beers.
The exception to the light beers is Guiness, which I get for free (got your attention there huh?) when I play in Sessions at Irish pubs. I have one pint at most, two on extremely rare occasions because of the earlier mentioned low alcohol tolerance which doesn't go well with riding my motorbike to the session, which I do whenever the weather is fine.
Have bodhran, will travel!

There's a brand of beer called "Tui's" that has some very funny ads, if you're a bloke.
One is here.

Each province in NZ has it's own preferred beer.
There's quite a good little list at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_beer.
Most of the breweries listed are at the micro end.

As a side note, I've requested that we catch a bus or taxi to a belgian beer cafe, http://www.defontein.co.nz/ for my birthday in April. They serve quite good food and have a range of belgian beers (duh!). I've only tried one, plus a sip of a couple of others as I was the driver that day. This time I want to put some serious effort into it.

Eeeyup. True story: here in Texas, Coors light is the light beer of manly men . . . drive up to Kansas, and suddenly, I'm an effete pate making hairdresser because Bud light is clearly the diet beer of manly men . . .

Yep, same here: popular is by definition commercialized.

Not only did I go to university, but I went to Army previously, and then joined a fraternity at my university: I have training.

Free guiness? Are you in heaven? One of my favorite bars/pubs of all time was an irish pub in Liverpool, England, that only served guiness and had this drunken guiness fueled singalong in the basement bar.

Yeah, beer and motorcycles don't seem to mix well . . .

That's it. I play some guitar. I'm taking up Irish music for the guiness . . .

Oh my, those were very good.

LOL
That's not training, that's at least a 5th degree black belt.
